Why PetCare Ally exists

PetCare Ally began with two animals I loved deeply.

Henry, my Great Pyrenees, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. The decisions that followed were some of the hardest of my life. Not long after, my mini horse Buster Brown colicked in the middle of the night — a different animal, a different crisis, the same desperate search for somewhere calmer than the internet to think it through.

Those moments revealed what every devoted pet family knows: when an animal depends on us, the decisions we make matter — and we deserve a clearer way to think them through.

My 12-year-old dog has started sleeping all day and seems stiff getting up. Is this just aging or should I be worried?

It can be a bit of both — and it's worth a vet check rather than chalking it up to age.

Stiffness getting up, plus sleeping more, is very often arthritis / joint pain in older dogs. The good news: that's treatable, and many dogs get noticeably more comfortable with the right plan.

But "slowing down" can also overlap with things worth ruling out — thyroid issues, pain elsewhere, heart or weight changes. A senior exam (often with bloodwork) sorts that out.

Book a regular appointment, and mention sooner if you also notice:

  • Trouble with stairs, or reluctance to jump or be touched
  • Weight or appetite changes, or drinking much more
  • Sudden weakness, collapse, or signs of real pain

For now: keep walks gentle and regular, add traction (rugs/runners) on slick floors, and a soft, supportive bed. Don't give human pain meds — many are toxic to dogs.
